Anapol Weiss attorneys Kristen Gibbons Feden and Emily Ashe recently achieved a significant legal victory, securing $317.5 million in verdicts for 17 women who survived childhood sexual abuse by former Long Island pediatrician Stuart M. Copperman.
Copperman’s medical license was revoked in 2000 after multiple women came forward, accusing him of sexually abusing young female patients over decades. However, he was not criminally charged at that time. In 2019, New York’s Child Victims Act allowed survivors to bring civil cases forward, even if the abuse occurred years ago. Over 100 former patients have since filed lawsuits against Copperman.
The verdicts for these seven women are a major step toward justice, holding Copperman accountable for the harm he caused. This outcome also draws attention to the systems that failed to protect patients and allowed the abuse to continue for so long.
Feden and Ashe’s work in these cases underscores the importance of legal advocacy for survivors of abuse. Their efforts not only provided justice for these seven individuals but also sent a message to other survivors that their voices matter, and the law can provide a path to accountability.
Anapol Weiss is proud to stand with survivors and remains committed to seeking justice for those who have been harmed.
Kristen Gibbons Feden represents a total of 104 survivors who filed suit against ex-doctor Stuart Copperman. With this new victory in judgments against the pediatrician, the total verdicts in cases led by Feden have now surpassed $1.3 billion. Combined, Feden has obtained awards for 75 survivors in these landmark cases against Copperman. This milestone, in addition to her other 7 figure settlements and awards for survivors, highlight her dedication to advocating for survivors and holding perpetrators accountable on a historic scale.
