On February 17, 2025, there was an explosion at SPS Technologies’ factory in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, a small suburb in Montgomery County just outside of Glenside in Abington Township. Following the explosion, fire raged at the factory for over two days while over sixty different fire departments responded to the blaze. SPS Technologies is a company that manufactures metal nuts, bolts, and other fasteners used in planes and other aircrafts. It is well known in the area that the factory houses a multitude of chemicals used for the manufacture of these parts, which may have been involved in feeding the fire and sadly, polluting the air and water for surrounding residents.
While the fire raged on February 18, 2025, local authorities asked residents to voluntarily evacuate because of concerns over air quality and extensive smoke in the area. A shelter-in-place order was issued for all residents and businesses within a one mile radius of the location, which also shut down regional rail lines as well as Abington and Jenkintown schools, and local private and parochial schools.

215-608-9645The Fire Creates Health Concerns
Concerns over the air quality are valid, as anyone in the surrounding area may have inhaled the smoke polluted with chemical fumes. Health effects from this inhalation could take weeks to surface, so everyone in the area should be wary in the coming weeks. Moreover, runoff water from the fire may have contaminated local water supplies, adding to concerns about the safety of local residents.
Potential Class Action Against SPS Technologies
Class action cases are filed when a large number of individuals suffered the same or similar injuries, and can be grouped together in a class for a single lawsuit against the potential defendant. Unlike a mass tort claim, in class actions, members of the class often have similar types of damages.
Anapol Weiss is actively investigating a class action case against SPS Technologies for negligent operation of its facility, leading to the explosion and resultant fire. Members of the class may include (1) persons asked to evacuate and/or shelter in their homes; (2) persons the vicinity who may have inhaled the smoke and/or drank contaminated water; (3) persons who missed work, lost customers, and/or had to close because of the fire; (4) persons who suffered actual property damage from the fire, smoke, or water.
If you or someone you know was affected by the SPS Technologies fire—whether through health concerns, financial losses, or property damage—you may have legal options. Contact Anapol Weiss today to learn more about your rights and potential compensation.
