Roblox, one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing gaming platforms, has been accused of failing to protect its young users from harmful and predatory content.
In 2023, Anapol Weiss attorneys Alexandra Walsh and Pat Huyett filed a class action lawsuit against Roblox on behalf of families who were misled by Roblox’s deceptive advertising and suffered financial harm as a result.
Then in the summer of 2024, Hindenburg Research issued a damning report against Roblox, concluding that Roblox is an “x-rated pedophile hellscape.”
Now Walsh, Huyett, and nationally renowned sexual abuse attorney Kristin Gibbons Feden are preparing personal injury cases against Roblox for the harm caused to children using the platform.
2023 Lawsuit Against Roblox
The 2023 complaint underscores how Roblox’s marketing has fostered misplaced trust among parents. The company portrays itself as a “family-friendly” platform, but as the lawsuit details, the reality is far different. Among the allegations:
- Predatory and Inappropriate Behavior: Children have encountered nude avatars, explicit virtual activities, and online grooming attempts. For example:
- A seven-year-old boy was sent abusive and sexually explicit messages through Roblox’s chat system.
- A nine-year-old girl received links to pornography websites from other Roblox users.
- A 12-year-old girl was groomed by a senior woman who initiated inappropriate conversations through the platform.
- Misleading Safeguards: Roblox claims to make it “extremely difficult” for strangers to contact children under 13. However, the lawsuit argues that these safeguards are largely disabled by default, making it alarmingly easy for predators to connect with young users.
The lawsuit features heartbreaking stories from families, such as a seven-year-old boy receiving sexually explicit messages, a nine-year-old girl being sent links to pornography websites, and a 12-year-old girl groomed by a predator masquerading as a peer. Parents, deceived by Roblox’s safety claims, spent thousands of dollars on Robux, only to discover their children were vulnerable to harm.
The Hindenburg Report: Exposing Roblox’s Systemic Failures
In 2024, Hindenburg Research released a scathing report labeling Roblox an “X-rated pedophile hellscape,” exposing its systemic failures to protect children. Key findings of the report include:
- Predatory Exploitation: Roblox’s virtual currency, Robux, is weaponized by predators who offer it in exchange for explicit content or actions.
- Insufficient Moderation Systems: Despite claiming to use advanced technology, Roblox’s moderation systems often fail to prevent harmful content or interactions.
- Misleading Safety Promises: Roblox markets itself as safe and family-friendly, but the reality is far more dangerous.
The report also highlighted findings from The National Center on Sexual Exploitation, which described Roblox as “a tool for sexual predators” and “a threat to children’s safety.”
The Hindenburg Report has been a wake-up call for parents:
- A False Sense of Security: Roblox’s open communication features and anonymous profiles create an environment that predators can easily exploit.
- Failure to Deliver Safety: Roblox’s safety measures are reactive at best and fail to provide adequate protection.
- A Lack of Accountability: The platform prioritizes growth and profits over user safety, leaving children vulnerable to harm.
