Injuries Due to Y Mesh Used to Treat Pelvic Organ Prolapse

By: Anapol Weiss

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, 1 in 4 women in their 40s and 1 in 3 women in their 60s are affected by pelvic organ prolapse (“POP”). POP affects half of all women by the time they reach their 80s.

POP occurs when one or more pelvic organs (the vagina, uterus, bladder, urethra, small intestine, and rectum) drop from their normal position due to a weak pelvic floor. When a pelvic organ drops, it can cause serious problems with bladder, bowel, and/or sexual function. One way to treat POP is by surgical implantation of mesh used to reinforce the pelvic floor muscles and tissues.

Y mesh is one type of mesh used to treat POP. This Y-shaped mesh is made from a material known as polypropylene. It is inserted abdominally and implanted to support the pelvic organs. Unfortunately, women can suffer severe, permanent complications from Y mesh, such as erosion of the mesh within the vaginal canal, scarring, pelvic pain, and chronic infection.

Alarmingly, Boston Scientific, Coloplast, Bard and other manufacturers of Y mesh were aware of these complications when they developed the product but failed to adequately warn women and physicians about the potential risks and complications. Though the FDA previously banned the sale of transvaginal mesh used for the treatment of POP, manufacturers are still able to sell Y mesh because it is inserted abdominally. Many women who have undergone Y mesh implantation experience significant injuries because of these manufacturers’ complete disregard for safety.

Y mesh manufacturers have a responsibility to ensure that their product is safe for consumers. When patients suffer injuries as a result of defective Y mesh, these manufacturers must be held accountable. If you or someone you know has been injured by a Y mesh product, it is crucial to seek legal representation. There are ongoing lawsuits against Y mesh manufacturers, and you may be able to seek compensation for your harm.
