What Pregnant Women Should Know About Placental Abruption

Going into labor and delivering a child is truly a miraculous experience. However, for first time mothers, the feeling of labor is new, and they aren’t sure what to expect. Thus, it is important that new mothers are counseled on what feelings they should expect, and what signs and symptoms are worrisome for the health of their unborn baby.

Obviously, when a woman goes into labor, there will be pains from the contractions. Those can start very slowly, and subtly, and might go almost unnoticed for some time. As the contractions get stronger, all women should recognize they are in labor.

However, if the contractions are accompanied by vaginal bleeding, abdominal and back pain, along with uterine tenderness and contractions coming one right after the other, the woman might be suffering from a placental abruption.

What is a Placental Abruption?

A placental abruption is life threatening for an unborn baby, as the amniotic sac that surrounds the child has literally torn from the inner lining of the uterus, and there might not be adequate oxygen going to the child. If this happens, and the child isn’t adequately oxygenated, the baby may suffer a serious brain injury or pass away in the birthing process.

What Happens When Placental Abruption is Suspected

If a woman has a suspected placental abruption, the doctors will assess the health of the child through traditional fetal monitoring. If the fetal monitoring strips show concern for the health of the baby, then doctors should call for an emergency c-section to prevent injury.
